this is one of those songs where the lyrics and story are so simple yet somehow so universal. i’m not sure how this works. the romantic interest of the narrator, while maybe briefly seduced, ends up falling in love with a girl from texas. what cuts most about the song i think is the deep resignation in its lyrics and the immediate wistfulness. its basically the pinpoint moment of realizing she’s lost someone. the worst part is the song reveals that in hindsight it was inevitable. it’s foreshadowed from the first line but the love interest was always somewhat out of reach of the narrator and tennessee. i think a lot of people can relate to hoping to be able to seduce someone and then that moment where you realize you never really had them
